CBD and THC both deliver a range of therapeutic benefits, from mood and sleep management to relief from pain and inflammation.

However, while there are many factors to consider when selecting a cannabis product, which to use, whether you should use them both, and at what ratio depends entirely on your personal care and health goals.

In this guide, we break down what each Ratio feels like, along with their best therapeutic uses. We will also include intel to help you build simple, effective regimens, like what products we consider daily use and what products should be used only as needed.

If you're looking for a product you can use daily, you're likely better off sticking to CBD. You can learn more about finding your ideal CBD dosage in our guide or by using our CBD Dosage Calculator, both of which are based on data from clinical trials, pre-clinical studies, and user experience reports.

But if you're still looking for a CBD:THC product to use on those days you need that extra mood, sleep, pain, or inflammation support, this guide is for you.

First, let's start with a quick run through what our two gold-star cannabinoids, CBD and THC, are best for when it comes to your health and well-being goals, and when it's appropriate to use both.

What is CBD best for?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is your best defense against the ravages of stress and inflammation. CBD generally comes in two forms: as an isolate, and as a full-spectrum product.

We recommend CBD for:

  • Establishing balance, or homeostasis. By toning the ECS, CBD activates, aligns, and balances your natural body systems to better support stress, brain function, mood, energy, sleep, recovery, and immunity. This includes balancing an exaggerated stress response, an overactive nervous system, an inflammatory immune response, and hormone levels, including cortisol.
  • Relieving anxiety and depression, bringing calming energy, and brightening your mood. CBD activates serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, which play a major role in mood and cognition. Activation of this receptor has been involved in the mechanism of action of anxiolytic, antidepressant, and antipsychotic medications.
  • Improving focus, memory, and cognitive performance. In addition to its roles in mood and memory, serotonin 5-HT1A plays an important role in neuronal plasticity—your brain's ability to adapt to new information and situations. It also improves functional brain connectivity by stimulating the growth of new networks while protecting the brain from inflammation and oxidative stress. CBD's neuroprotective and neuroplastic effects have also been linked to its ability to relieve anxiety and depression.
  • Relieving pain and inflammation. While CBD is studied to relieve pain and inflammation in a range of conditions, there are certain types of pain it works better against. For example, CBD desensitizes TRPV1 pain channels, which are inflamed and highly active in chronic conditions like endometriosis. For severe pain, we would recommend including THC.

What is THC best for?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is an anandamide analog. Anandamide is a type of cannabinoid—called an endocannabinoid—that your body produces naturally, and it primarily interacts with your endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Mounting evidence suggests that a clinical endocannabinoid deficiency is responsible for a number of conditions and disorders, including migraines, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and endometriosis. And while CBD does improve endocannabinoid tone over time, THC exerts its anandamide-like effects immediately.

THC also induces apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in errant endometrial and cancer cells.

Therefore, for immediate relief of chronic pain, we suggest you try THC.

When it comes to anxiety and depression, low amounts of THC have been studied to exert anxiolytic (anxiety-relieving) and antidepressant effects. It has also been studied to be neuroprotective in low doses, which is largely mediated by the CB1 receptor of the endocannabinoid system.

However, THC is biphasic. While lower doses may relieve anxiety, higher doses can exaggerate anxious symptoms.

How to interpret our Ratios.

There are two parts to each ratio. The first part indicates the amount of CBD in relation to the second part, THC. For example, our 1 CBD : 1 THC Oil contains equal parts CBD and THC—there is 1mg of THC for every 1mg of CBD. On the other hand, our 3 CBD : 1 THC Oil contains 1mg of THC for every 3mg of CBD.

If you prefer to think in percentages, divide each number in the ratio by the sum of the two numbers to get the percentage of cannabinoids per drop. For example, 1/(1+1) = 50% CBD, and 20/(20+1)=95% CBD.

How to calculate CBD and THC per ml in our Ratios.

We package all MSC tinctures (AKA oil drops) in 30ml volumes in two variations:

  • 1,500mg total actives
  • 3,00mg total actives

Note: For the sake of simplicity, we are defining actives as the major cannabinoids CBD and THC.

Once you've determined the percentage (%) of CBD and THC in a Ratio you've purchased (see section: How to interpret Ratios), multiply the figure by the total actives.

Continuing the example from the previous section:

  • 1,500mg 1 CBD : 1 THC Oil bottle contains 50% x 1,500mg total actives = 750mg CBD
  • 1,500mg total actives - 750mg CBD = 750mg THC
  • 750mg CBD / 30ml = 25mg CBD
  • 750mg THC / 30ml = 25mg THC

1 CBD : 1 THC

Considered the ideal balance by researchers. Calming and uplifting, expect a moderate level of intoxication. Learn more →

Best therapeutic uses:

  • Severe chronic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Nausea
  • Severe menstrual pain
  • Overcoming opioid addiction
  • Nightcap as an alcohol replacement
  • Serious sleep issues

Is it daily use?

Use only as needed—we would not consider this a daily-use product. This is a potent product with high amounts of THC, and while low doses of THC have been studied to exert numerous anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-cancer, and neurogenic benefits, chronic use of THC may lead to cognitive impairment and immune dysfunction.

3 CBD : 1 THC
